Teflon is the mark name of poly-tetra-fluor-etheen (PTFE), a chemical connection which is discovered in 1938, by Roy Plunkett of the firma DuPont in the American state New Jersey. In 1949, it was introduced as commercial product. Teflon is etheenpolymeer in which the hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine. The polymer has a very large length and is still of the largest molecules.

There are polymers also other with the same trading name and similar properties: per-fluor-alkoxy-polymeren (PFA):

Of Teflon it is said that it a spin-off would be of the space travel programme of the US although it came long for that time already on the market. More truth sits in the statement that it is a spin-off of the Manhattanproject ^[4].
